Spring Final ~ Zine Book

Overview

A zine is a self-published, small-circulation booklet or magazine that is often created by individuals or groups to express their ideas, art, or interests. Zines can cover a wide range of topics, including personal stories, political commentary, art, music, or any niche interest. They are typically produced using simple printing methods, such as photocopying or digital printing, and are often distributed informally, through local shops, events, or online.

Zines are known for their DIY ethos, allowing creators to express themselves freely without the constraints of traditional publishing. They can be an excellent medium for fostering creativity, sharing unique perspectives, and building community among like-minded individuals.

Objective - What is the problem I need to solve?

  • How will I explore publication design to create a multi-spread book?

  • How will I use typography with imagery to create a publication?

  • How will I explore the zines to express yourself?

Project Requirements

  • At least an 8 or 12 age book is created.

  • Zine size is up to you. Common spread sizes would be 8.5x11, 11x14, etc.

  • Typography is incorporated in a creative and meaningful way

  • Two physical publications are created for a classroom set and a personal copy

Step 1: Brainstorming Steps

  1. Create a new folder inside your Final folder and name it “Zine”.

  2. Create a new Google Doc inside your project folder and copy and paste the Zine Book Creative Brief into this new doc.

  3. Fill out the top of the Creative Brief and title it by clicking on Untitled Document.

  4. Complete the Creative Brief brainstorming steps.

Step 2: Projects Steps

  1. Download a zine template and open it in InDesign.

  2. Use Illustrator and/or Photoshop to create your zine.

  3. You can design in either and place the AI or PSD file onto the pages of your zine. As you update your AI or PSD files it will automatically update in Indesign.

  4. Make sure to not put type too close to the border so it doesn’t get cut off, unless that is your intent. Use the margins.

Step 3: Printing Steps

  1. Go to your Pages window and double-click on the Master Pages. Delete the page numbers and then double-click on a page to exit that screen.

  2. Save your file as lastName_zine.

  3. Save your file as a PDF file by going to File>Export and make sure you have selected High Quality Print in the PDF window. You can leave the settings as is.

  4. Drop it in your Misc folder for printing.

Step 4: Turn In Directions

  1. Save your file as an InDesign file.

  2. Upload your Indesign, PDF and AI or PSD files to your Zine folder.
